The Pacific Ocean

I remember the first time I saw the Pacific Ocean. I stuck my toes in the surf and was surprised to find out it was freezing. I also enjoyed my first sunset into the ocean. Having grown up in the North East I had only seen the sun rise over the open ocean.

My stash of seaglass is running low, I can make a few dozen more pendants. New England is in a deep freeze and searching for more seaglass is out of the question. Handling seaglass on these cold winter days takes me back to the place I found it. I try to keep track of what came from where, as I feel it is important to know that. The origin of things matters, don't you think?

Hand dyed Antique Lace

I have only a small bit of my two favorite laces left. I need to get out to more antique shows and flea markets. I had so many boxes, I thought I would never run out. If you live in the Northeast you really have to go to Brimmfield. It is the most amazing antique market I have ever seen. This year had a theme for me. I found three brooches a spider, fly and beetle. I love them.

This piece is a first attempt at anecklace for a friends Black Tie Fundraiser I like to make a few options when I do custom work. The next piece has a starry Night quality, I will post pics when that is finished. I plan to gift one of these to the fundraiser, as the money will go to NJ schools.

This statement necklace is for a friend in NYC. She has an opening to attend and wanted something spectacular. She is wearing this with a black riding jacket and lurex jeans. The beads and lace are vintage. The black lace is from a hand made mermaid dress that was worn on New Years Eve to the Limelight in NYC. The lace is going out for an encore.

A Winter Wedding

This Neck Piece is a prototype for a Winter Wedding I am working on. I dug deep into my vintage lace and pearls. I pulled out a box of vintage sequin appliques from Roth Imports. A treasure found in NYC at the Chelsea Flea Market. The box has all original packaging indicating 1092 as the date of origin. Tru 80's Glam.

The effect is very romantic and should be worn with a warm ecru strapless dress. The dress is planned to be very simple. No lace or beadwork. A simple beautiful silk shape. Inspired by vintage classic dresses.

I love being involved from the start. It gives me a chance to see down the road. This is going to be an elegant candle lit wedding. Warm and glowing.

This is my next project. I love Chan Lu, inspiration.

Harrisville Looms in NH

One of the most spectacular towns in New Hampshire is Harrisville. The old mill buildings made from brick have gorgeous old warehouse style windows and wide plank flooring. The waterfall and river actually pass under the mill buildings. The Harrisville Looms are one of my favorite places to sneak away to. Walls and bins of Roving and yarn, not a synthetic anything in sight! You walk in the little retail shop and your hit with the warm scent of wool.

My favorite thing is to go to the bin where you can mix your own bag of roving by color. I pull and stuff and think of ideas. I love it!!

Bohemian Chic, Charm and Feather Necklaces

Fashion is at a fun place right now. I really relate to bohemian Chic. I love natural materials and gifts from nature. I am trying to think of ways to incorporate the amazing chunks of mica I find around the woods here. I am on a feather kick at the moment. These necklaces are fun to wear because the feathers catch the breeze as you move and since tethered will flutter. The feather makes a nice background for other handmade charms and recycled beads.

Second bead project. I am working in my colors. Pearls and white bone. A big clear glass heart bead made from recycled glass. Linen in a tattered and fringed way. I always come back to nature. Soft and romantic. The shape of the dress is yet to come. The chiffon is only gathered and pinned. I know for sure the dress will be backless. working out the other details.

I am enjoying beading! Who knew? It is a lot like mosaic work and evolves as you go.

Summer Experiments, new skills

When I was little my Irish mother used summer as a time to teach us creative skills. Alternative learning. The arts were an every day part of life in our house. Someone was always making a dress or new summer top. I remember making kid suede rose barrettes. They would be perfect with romantic bohemian chic looks. My dad made me a bead loom and drove me to a bead supply house in Boston to purchase giant bags of glass seed beads. I still have those big coffee cans full of beads. I remember trips to Natick Mall to an incredible old school button shop called 'Windsor Button'. Learning new skills was a way of life.

I still view summer as the lazy days of experimentation. The pace of life changes... (not slowing down, just different) I find myself on road trips to towns and cities I don't usually get to during the busy school year. I find evenings filled with more down time, and no check lists of school work or projects that must be completed. I cherish those evenings and view them as my time. I am using my free time this week to try my hand at beadwork. I am working on turquoise suede and using my spare glass bead collection.

Any critiques, advice or helpful tips are welcome! I hope to finish this cuff bracelet by the weekend.

I found an ancient Butterfly Book!

The pages were falling out. Someone loved it dearly. Pencil and pen marks point to species that have been found and identified. I love a well worn and loved book. I found the owners own attempt at drawing the butterflies tucked inside the book. I think I will frame it even though it is torn and water stained. I also found a 'golden' butterfly and moth book from 1942, a 'field guide'.

I made this pendant from the field guide. The other antique book may be a potential for restoration.

My entire life...I have been a nature girl. I'm still like a little kid. Rescuing the little orange newts off the road. Waiting at the top of a chipmunk hole for him to think it's safe. I just love the outdoors. Wherever I go I am always picking up 'things'. A piece of metal, run over by cars. Feathers or bones I find in the woods. Sea shells and glass at the beach. River rocks or mica... it all comes home.

I have started pulling out my boxes of treasures. I am loving the Bohemian Chic movement. These necklaces represent a little part of what I am working on...

I made a few dozen of these for a wedding in Virginia (Virginia is for Lovers after all). The mossy green appeals to me. I was worried what the bride would think because moss actually varies so greatly in color. This is a 'true' New Hampshire moss color. Touches of red and a forest green. The flowers are enhanced with hand painting, really I should call it hand-staining. I let the water carry the color onto the petals. Each girl will be wearing 5 of these in up-swept hair. Cute.

My friend, a retail veteran from specialty. Opened a shop in Fort Myers, Andrea Lane. If you get a chance stop in. It's across from the Lexus dealer or Tamiami trail.

She asked me to work up a few tshirt samples. This is a first pass...

The tshirt is dip dyed and starts as deep hot pink, gently fading on the way up. The applique is hot pink linen, a touch of chiffon and soft pink ultra suede leaves. Machine washable, hang to dry.

Then she suggested to me that I should offer 'appliques' for people to update and restyle their current wardrobe. I thought it sounded like a fun idea. So trying it out on Etsy and at a local fair.

Heirloom Bouquet Jodi French

I have been asked to create a fabric bouquet for the woodland wedding. I am working in a mix of textures... taffeta, crepe, chiffon, and satin. The colors are a range of ecru and ivory tones. Each flower is dotted in the center with a cluster of black jet beads. The bouquet is going to have a handle of willow branches and tendrils of grapevine. I have started wiring the flowers to form the arrangement, only to realize I need to make many, many more! The wedding is early summer, better get to work.

Mass College of Art was so amazing. Alfred Fiandaca taught Fashion Design and it was a magic episode in the schools history. A friend taught me how to make beads. I would love to have access to the equipment again, it is really fun to do. This bead reminds me of the ice found in nature. Little flecks of black and bubbles caught as the water froze.

The bride has naturally curly hair, a long thin neck, and beautiful smooth ivory skin. She is wearing her hair up with tendrils falling around. All Things Nature, Botanicals and the Tides

I am truly a nature girl. I have always spent as many waking hours out of doors as possible. I have been blessed with a gypsy lifestyle that allows me to live in very diverse and dramatic natural settings. For some reason I always seem to be in the right place at the right time. I have seen manta rays 5 feet across, pods of killer whales, mother and baby manatees, an eagle swooping into a lake to grab a fish in it's talons. These are a few memories from the past years in Florida.

I currently live in the shadow of Monadnock, in a small village with a very European flavor. We have a gorgeous mountain lake and beautiful natural surroundings. The nature here is on a much gentler scale. I walk every morning around a trail called Boulder Run. I have seen fox, deer and bear. I am currently watching the world up here waking up from it's winter sleep... The first flickers of animal life were the little chipmunks. They are running around very busy. The sun is coming up a tiny bit earlier every day.

These flowers are over 40 years old. They are from Europe and travelled to this country with my mother when she came to start her family here in America. The flowers have been packed away carefully. I took them apart and stitched in layers. I added some vintage pearls into the center cups. The flowers were mounted onto vintage bias tape in soft pink.

The look is sweet and simple. The flowers have a true vintage feeling.

"On Paper" Is a gorgeous little paper shop located in the "Short North" district of Columbus, Ohio. This shop is a treasure! I have known the owner, Joan Schnee, since she was a very young woman. I remember her dreams of owning a Paper Shop. Joan would tell me about how to actually make paper. It was her passion. I feel like I knew "On Paper" before it even came to exist! Well, the shop is real now, and has been for quite some time. To me it represents a time gone by. A time when people took the time to sit down and think about each other. The lost art of pen to paper, carefully sealing an envelope, selecting the perfect stamp. I don't know about you, but receiving a hand written note or letter is still one of the greatest pleasures in life. Joan's shop also is a place to rediscovery the art of etiquette, talk about a dying art! Joan knows how to create and deliver fine, crafted and artful invitations and thank you notes. Yankee Magazine, headquarters in our town, puts on a Barn Sale every year. I love this!!! The treasures today were numerous. I am sitting here thinking about running back for the vintage ball jars and lightning jars. Wait, maybe I should go back for those flower tins, the red paint was perfectly distressed.

Wanted to share some of my treasure- hand carved mother of pearl buttons for pennies! Gorgeous vintage glass pearls, freshwater pearls, and a few real cultivated pearl strands. I found some amazing vintage book plates.

A friend asked for some flowers for her wedding. She is Latin and gave me swatches of a beautiful teal and orange. A Latin wedding is a very fun celebratory event. The gorgeous dark hair and tan skin of the women look amazing with intense colors. I made a few dozen flowers and LOVED the bright colors. It inspired me to experiment. I love the brights.

My baby Max the best dog in the world

My golden Max was a gift to my son when he was 3. We went to a farm in north Jersey to get him. He is a funny looking little guy. His Dad was an almost white golden named Casper. Big, beautiful dog. His Mom was a really boxy headed girl who stood taller than most females. We usually get rescue pets but it was too late when we saw this pup. Max brings such joy and comfort to our family. He is the goofiest little trouble maker you could ever find. He is sensitive and gets his feelings hurt quite easily. His best friend is a little black alley cat we found in NJ. Max is now 8 years old his birthday is Christmas Day!

Ok, I have had this buckle sitting around for the longest time. The thing is 5"x4". That's a dinner plate! I was inspired to try some new clay. It's cellulose and I love it. When I find these treasures it reminds me of being a kid. I will use a book with such enthusiasm and excitement when it is new. Then I tire of that book and go in search of a new one. I will come back to a book from time to time. It never holds that same magic as when first discovered.

My newest treasure is "Insects" it is a text book by Golden from 1960. The line drawings are great. I have a love of bugs, beetles, spiders etc... Anyone else crazy about bugs?

This mosaic is made from that same dictionary. We have been having so much fun with it. My son thinks it's the funniest thing. Some of the words are a hoot. The words they choose to illustrate are even funnier. The dictionary is from 1940 and it is a webster dictionary. If you ever come across one you should buy it!

I have made a collection of Sea Glass Pendants. I found the glass at Fort Myers Beach. I think because we are gulf coast and do not have tons of waves, the glass is only slightly smoothed. I decoupage and add a glass bead charm to each one.

Marie Antionette Mosaic

This mosaic contains a tiny photo of an oil painting of Marie Antionette. The clay is hand pressed and then rubbed with paints and gold metallic. The clear sea glass is decoupaged with vintage dictionary pages. The feeling is of age and a collection of special objects.

Valentines Birdhouse

I found these little birdhouses at the florists. They were tin. I painted them red with enamel, they shine! i distressed the paint a little. I decoupaged them with vintage dictionary cuts and some favorite lace flower images. I tied two glass hearts to the leather cord and knotted it so the birdhouse can be hung. I am so pleased with this that I am going to make more. I think they would be a fun way to deliver a valentines note! I will roll it up and stick it into the hole. Wouldn't it befun to come home and find this hanging from your mailbox!

I'm feeling the Love! Starting to get ready for Valentines Day. We live a quick bike ride from one of the most amazing chocolatiers in the world. Norman Love. Yes that's his real name! If you have never had a Norman Love truffle, you should really google him and see what he does. His chocolates are pretty (i have seen more creative and exciting) however his are perfect. My sons favorite truffle is "key lime pie". My favorite is cayanne. I started making Valentines today.

Framed Mosaic Collage

I have been working on making wooden picture frames to house my mosaics. They are both waxed, one with gold tint, the other with red tint. The mosaics both contain photos of vintage art. The beads are from my bead collection going back to the 80's. I rough the grout up with a textured towel. My goal is a look of age. the mosaics feel like little treasures found over time. I want to start hunting for objects like keys and subway tokens etc...

Hi everyone, I want to give a heads up to fellow internet junkies like myself. Be careful, don't get lazy with your passwords. Adding a few #'s to switch it up is not enough! Make your passwords to EVERYTHING different. I was ripped off by my paypal account using my info from twitter. I never would have thought of twitter as a possible link to paypal. Turns out people are gathering that info, then doing searches for other accounts. Changing up a few #'s is not a problem for these people. Remember too, security questions you make up yourself should not have yes or no answers. They should have detailed answers. I hope I have saved you an evening of phone calls canceling accounts, freezing and changing passwords etc.. Think like a secret agent! Assume any and all info about you is usable!
